I really wish there was a "pause" button on these puzzles - I was interrupted by a phone call part-way through. The only way I've found to stop the clock is to save and then exit the site. Anybody got a better method?

Save and reopen is the intended method of pausing, yes. In fact, it's exactly what it's for. It only needs one extra click (to close the window) compared to a dedicated pause/continue button, so I have never seen the need to have two methods of doing exactly the same thing. You can then just click the saved puzzle icon to continue the puzzle when you're ready.

That said, there's no intrinsic reason why we can't have a separate pause button, but it's also a case of trying not to overload the interface. I have never wanted the timer to be a central aspect of playing the puzzle, while you're actually solving, and so the player doesn't show your time - to have a pause button I would also need to add a timer, for it to make sense. And you'd still have to remember to press it. :) I could make it auto-pause if you don't do anything for a while, but it would need to be after say 15 minutes or some such so that it didn't interrupt you while just thinking.

But all that said, if it was a popular request then I would add it.

Also, just to add, the timer doesn't keep running if you leave the window open unless you then save or complete the puzzle. If you just shut the window, it doesn't store the time you took up until then. This is one reason why 'multiple sessions' moves you to the right-hand column, for times which can't be directly compared with single-session times.

Not difficult really but 40x40 so hard on the eyes it leads to mistakes

@bergensbest,

I believe Gareth is referring to the columns on the Rankings page, which is separated into 2 columns: Completed in one session without solving aids on the left and All other times on the right.

EDIT: Formatting

Yes, on the detailed ranking page, accessible by clicking the link directly under the puzzle info at the top of this page.

Timewaster, if you're on a desktop then don't forget you can maximize the window so it scales up and fills the screen. I wouldn't try solving a 40x40 puzzle on a small device, I completely agree.

@Cartoonite and Gareth
Thanks. I'm amazed that I could have missed that. It's so obvious!!

Key

  • A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
  • Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
  • If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
  • Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
