Gareth - can you help? -I have completed this Puzzle and I can save it in its completed state but when I try to check it I cannot get the usual screen. Two blank boxes appear, one on top of the other and the only thing I can do is to close. This has recently happened a number of times - randomly - sometimes with a free puzzle and sometimes not, and not always the same puzzle type. Any suggestions?

Hi Timewaster,
I've never heard of such a problem, so this is surprising - and I'm sorry you've been having problems. When someone comments I now log browser info, so it looks like you're using Safari on an up-to-date Mac, is that right?

When is 'recently' - do you mean a day or two, a week or two, or a month or two? I'm asking so I can see if I can connect to any changes, although the only real change was when I altered the completion dialogue a couple of months ago - but I haven't heard of any remaining issues with that (except an occasional time-out problem). Free puzzles have no effect on the player - that's just a status flag as to whether you can open it or not.

Where do the blank boxes appear? Is it possible to take a screenshot? According to Apple: To take a screenshot, press and hold these three keys together: Shift, Command and 3. If you see a thumbnail in the corner of your screen, click it to edit the screenshot. Or wait for the screenshot to save to your desktop.

If you can grab a screenshot I can investigate further, but without that I wouldn't really know where to start I'm afraid.

The most likely explanation is that you're running some kind of internet security software which is breaking the site. Are you running McAfee, Norton or that kind of thing?

Thanks for your comments Gareth - I'm replying and sending photos of how it looks on screen by email

Key

  • A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
  • Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
  • If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
  • Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
